To those searching for health,

It’s an honor and a privilege to be your food and gut microbiome guide. My aim is to improve your health, drawing on the experience of five years leading The Food & Microbiome Innitiative at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. I also bring over twenty years of experience unlocking the secrets of the gut microbiome as a graduate of Columbia Medical School and physician scientist in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington.

The foundation taught me solutions don’t have to be complicated. In fact they can’t be in the people and parts of the world that need it most. I have also become convinced that microbiome-informed approaches that shine light on the most fundamental medicine, the food and nutrients we eat, need to be applied right here at home. Otherwise, our problems (obesity, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, etc.) will continue to grow into the world’s problems.

This is why I am also excited to be partnering with Marc Washington at Supergut working toward rigorously evaluating & democratizing delicious & convenient functional foods. Searching far and wide, there was no enterprise with bigger heart and commitment to taking an evidence-based approach. Indeed, a randomized placebo controlled trial of a microbiome-targeting fiber-based food was recently completed.

In this blog I hope to share with you a broad and literature-backed distillation of the evidence in easy to digest sound bites. The mission is to provide reliable information to clarify your relationship with food and nutrients so that you can take back control of your health.
