Why Gut Bites

Making food and microbiome science practical for everyday health.

To those searching for health,

My goal is to improve health by translating food and microbiome science into everyday decisions. I draw on five years leading The Food & Microbiome Initiative at the Gates Foundation, and more than twenty years studying the gut microbiome as a graduate of Columbia Medical School and physician-scientist in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington.

The foundation taught me that solutions do not have to be complicated. In fact, they cannot be in the people and parts of the world that need them most. I have also become convinced that microbiome-informed approaches, those that shine light on the most fundamental medicine, the food and nutrients we eat, need to be applied right here at home. Otherwise, our problems (obesity, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and more) will continue to grow into the world’s problems.

This is why I created GutBitesMD, a resource for democratizing the latest research in nutrition.Through this platform, I share a broad, literature-backed distillation of the evidence in easy-to-digest insights, along with tools like a Smart Nutrition Scanner to help choose the most gut-supportive foods. The mission is to provide reliable, practical guidance that clarifies your relationship with food so you can take back control of your health.

To Good Food & Health,
